Have the 'add reply option' but also have the 'quick reply' box at the very bottom. I personally prefer to use those, but I don't mind using the 'add reply'

Also, on some forums, they have a chatbox located at the top. Rather than talking on a thread, multiple people can talk to each other without having to refresh a full page.
